ESP instruction was first developed in the late 1960s in response to a need for targeted assistance for learners from non‐English speaking backgrounds who were studying or working in English‐speaking countries.

It has continued to expand in range, complexity, and importance, largely due to external factors such as the spectacular growth in the global use of English in trade, business, science, education and research, and the increasing role of English as a lingua franca in international and intranational communication.

Another influence has been the stronger emphasis on accountability and relevance in all educational initiatives in recent years.

ESP has been shaped by the “social turn” in second language teaching and learning theory, and this has led to an expansion of the curriculum from one based on close analysis of texts to one that incorporates learners' target and learning needs and strategies 2005.
